Data Retention Policies
Data Retention Policies
Many governments around the world have
new regulations requiring companies to
retain data, including e-mail and IM
messages. This means every company—from
the mom and pop store on the corner to
multi-national corporations—have to keep
backup copies of their data for many
years, even decades. But many IT
departments have difficulty accessing
data in an emergency, let alone if
served with a subpoena requesting
information from five years ago. So how
can IT departments ensure that they have
access to that data when necessary?
On top of the problem of having a
complete backup available, many tape
archiving systems are quickly obsolete.
You may be working with a tape device
that isn’t even made any more and that
your current tapes don’t support. Most
IT personnel just cross their fingers
and hope they’re never called on to
produce data from several years back.
But there is a way to make sure you have
data access without relying on good
luck. The solution is to implement a
disk-based recovery system in your IT
environment. With
disk-based recovery,
information is saved onto more reliable
media that can be archived for years.
Plus, you don’t need any special
equipment to restore your data, just the
original software you used to create the
backup in the first place. In addition,
you can archive the disk-based data onto
tape to comply with government
regulations. Plus in the event of a
disaster,
disk-based
solutions have the
added benefit of enabling you to recover
much more quickly than you would be able
to using your tape backups.
